Where did a week go

It's amazing sometimes how quickly time fly's by. Last Thursday I said I had to be in Tulsa with Mom and it was an all day event like I predicted. Her check up was fine and looks like she is ok to have surgery in a couple weeks. Friday was the start of some very pretty days here. Now that I'm in the master gardeners group I was able to participate in my first event as a member.  For arbor day we went to 3 elementary schools and had trees for the kids to help plant.  Planted American Elm trees. This is the same specie of tree that is the Survivor Tree in Oklahoma City that was at the site on the bombing of the Murrah Building. That was in 1995, one year after I moved to Oklahoma. The rest of the day was getting tomato plants and some herbs. Saturday  was such a pretty day, spent all day outside. Had to get the back porch cleaned off to bring out the plants that have been in the house and garage. Need to get pictures but the ones that were

Spring is Here

By this weekend and it will be in the 70's - 80's and I'm ready for it. Been cleaning up flower beds and yesterday I picked up some zinnia seeds to plant. Maybe tomorrow, today Mom has an appt. at CHF clinic and usually these appts. are an all day event. I do hope to get some stitching in while there. I'll take the Mosaic Diamond (Mom Quilt) with me. As you can see is that there are two colors here that I decided to use for the outer ring on the diamonds. I decided to add the cream grunge because on some of the diamonds the fabric would blend in too much with the gray grunge. In fact I had sewn it on and put them up on the wall and that is when I realize I would change it up. Do you see what I mean? Fun part was taking the ones sewn on off, not easy. I was so afraid of accidentally snipping the hexes. Went very slow. I need to get  pictures soon of all the diamonds I have together. I started this quilt almost a year ago, it was

New Project

I know... I need a new project like I need a hole in my head, as the saying goes. But I couldn't resist. I had been seeing photos on Instagram and blogs from the Netherlands and surrounding countries. I was so drawn to it...No control. It's a Mystery Hexagon quilt called Winterse Hexjes from Anne Liefs  who has a quiltshop in the Netherlands. She started the mystery at the beginning of this year but you can still sign up like I did a couple weeks ago This was week 1 and 2 Week 3 and 4  Now I'm starting on week 5  I'm using 1" hexagons and it is so far moving right along but I figure as it gets bigger it will take a little longer Speaking of slowly moving along.... It's the second crochet scrap yarn blanket. The one furthest is the completed first blanket and as you can see the second one is getting closer. Have about 24" left to go and I will so glad when it's done. I can say that I should have a

Hand Quilting

Big milestone, I finished quilting on the main body of this Blue Rocky Road  Now it time to work on the border  I have decided on what stencil pattern to do, it's from one of Helen Squire's book,  Instead of making a plastic stencil, I figured making a cardboard oval with some registration marks could work And using a white Nonce Marking pencil that can be removed with water. I find that this pencil stays on longer than a chalk pencil and great on dark fabrics. Important since I needed to mark one side because I had to make it all fit. So I laid the oval and trace and than put the marks for registration  Using those mark I can trace the curves. Voila  Ready for the hoop, and I have a couple to pick from I think I'll start with the hoop that is design for this job, edges. If not I can always use the small oval. Now comes to where I need your help, I'm not sure w

What's Up 4.23.18

Good Morning and a congratulation to Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge on their new son. Such a sweet family, the children are so cute. We had a good slow rain this weekend with no severe weather, which is odd. We have not had a tornado since last October here in Oklahoma. In fact California which never had that many before have had 5 already this season. I don't know but maybe global warming could be a factor. So while inside I worked on the Kith and Kin top. Was able to get two more blocks completed This makes 6 completed and which mean that I have 3 more to do. Went ahead and cut them out but instead of putting them up on the wall like I usually do, I put them up on the portable design wall. The wall has the Vintage Garden quilt up and I plan to keep it there until I have the border finished. This has scallops around each block and also all around the outside edge. Now the directions I have are a copy from the book,

Hey Sunday

Here it is April 21 and it's been in the 50's and we have a fire in the stove. I can't remember having one for days this late before. Strange weather, but I do like the cooler temperatures. I have been wanting to share this for months.  I have since the new year started keeping track of the days and time spent in the sewing room, this doesn't count in handwork or quilting. Kate over at Life in Pieces has been doing this and I out of curiosity decided to follow her lead and see how much time I do spend sewing. I have spread sheets that I have to keep track. These are the last 3 months and since I haven't yet made a tab at the top for me to keep track, here are my current numbers Days with stitching time this week:  6 out of 7 days  (missed one this week) Days with stitching time this month:  20 out of 21 days Days with stitching time this year:   82 out of 111 days Success rate:  74% Hours spent so far to this day 120 hours and

Cow Trivia

I am tired of just of writing about quilting and such. And you really don't want me to write about housework or other cleaning, heck I don't even want to. So I thought I would do something related to the farm  How about Cow Trivia * A cow has 32 teeth, and will chew about 40 - 50 times a minute. *A cow will chew for up to 8 hours a day * Cows move their jaws about 40,000 times a day *Cows spend about 10 hours a day laying down. * Cows will stand up and lay down about 14 times a day. *Cows can sleep while they're standing. ( is that where cow tipping comes in) * The first cow arrived in the U.S. in 1611 in Jamestown. * A cow will consume about 40 lbs. of food in a day. * The hamburger debuted at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. * Almost 2,000 quarter pound hamburgers can be made from the ground beef in one cow. * Cows have an acute sense of smell and can detect odors up to 6 miles away. Pretty cool facts.
