I'm Still Here

Since I last written it has been a whirl wind of activities around me. I had the garden to prep and plan and have it hooked up to an automatic timer (my new toy for this year for the garden)  for watering while gone but it's been so wet and cool since I left I had "The Man of the Place" turn it off for now. With that rain come the threaths of tornados and that is one thing I do not miss.  I'm at my daughters now visiting and enjoying my Grandsons. They turned 3 and they are so sweet but they are also typical little 3 year olds. Full of energy and talking a mile a minute. You can guess that when evening comes this Grammy is pretty tired.  Now I did bring some piecework to do and have done some.  I did finish the last two blocks of Rubys Garden before I came, so I hope to work on getting those set when I get back. The drive was a very pleasant one and I did get to listen to a couple of books on the way and  I liked them both. The first on

Spring Check Ups

Last week the "Man of The Place" told me that it was time to work the cows. Now what he calls working the cows - I call their spring check up - cause its a lot like giving my cat's their annual check up So last weekend and today we did our herds. We round them up  and will seperate the cows from their calfs  so we can run them threw the chute. This is where we give them a good look and take notice of their overall health and if there anything that needs to be attended to. Like this old girl who had   a back hoof that is growing oddly and  needed a pedicure. You can see that her hoof is growing upward, forgive how gross looking it is. It does not hurt her now but it could become a problem and she could go lame. It should look like the other back foot Remove the odd hoof - or just a part - and off she went after she was dewormed and given her vaccines. We vaccinate to prevent sexual diseases and the prevention of

Sewing with a Kitten

If you have cats and especially a kitten, you know what its like to try to sew at times when they are present. Bob my kitten loves to be around when I'm sewing - so one day when he was up on my table I just had to take some pictures of Bob being Bob. At this time he was really into chewing on everything or try to pick it up and take off with it. Hope you find them as amusing as I did. He was really being a pest this day. All this activity wore him out. He has grown some since then but he is still a really cute cat. Can be your best friends

Straw Bales for vegetables

I am trying something new for me. Its been around for a while now but I just now decided to give it a try and that is growing veggies in straw bales. I have a friend who had done this and she had great success and I hope to too. So I started by laying down some landscape fabric to help prevent weeds from growing underneath the bales.  Being where my garden is located it is a never ending battle fighting weeds. Then I postion the bales on their sides  and started conditioning them with blood meal (doing it the organic way) I apply 3 cups of blood meal per bale on day 1, 3, 5  watering everyday.  Day 7-9 I'll put 1.5 cups and continue to water it in each day. Day 10 I'll apply a organic fertilizer. Should be ready to plant 2 - 4 days later. I'll keep posting pictures and updating. I'm on day 5 now. You want to know more than what little I have written go to these site to know more and they are the ones I following the "
